Finally we get to know how the expansion team will look like. The Suwon kt wiz unveiled their logo, cap insignia, and uniforms earlier this morning.
The presentation was held in downtown Seoul, near the old palace at a place by the name of “olleh square” – a venue of kt used for mini-concerts.
So, below are the results:
Above are the cap insignia of the wiz. Two have been presented since their home and away caps with have different insignia. The Transformeresque insignia is for the away caps, and the other is for their home caps. The home insignia did remind me of a mesh between logos of some teams in the States.
Their logo was a rather interesting one as expansion teams are trying very hard to link themselves with the local culture.
Suwon is pretty much known among Koreans for its UNESCO World Cultural Heritage “Hwaseong Fortress” (수원 화성). Built in 1796 during the Joseon Dynasty, the fortress includes a mini-palace which served as an emergency capital whenever Seoul (then called Hanyang) was invaded by nearby countries. The border of the logo imitates one of the four pavilions of the fortress, namely, the North-East Pavilion (동북각루).
Apparently, their official name, “kt wiz” is spelled with every character in lower case as with every brand kt owns under their name. That is why the venue for their presentation is “olleh square”, not “Olleh Square”.
As for the uniforms, the orange lines that go through the away uniform makes it look rather odd. Draftees of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft including the first two overall picks, Sim Jae-min (심재민, LHP) and Yu Hee-woon (유희운, RHP), and 12th overall selection, Park Se-woong (박세웅, RHP) modeled for the uniforms.
And, of course, the cheergirls.
And, at last but not least, their mascot. *drumroll*
I was speechless after seeing what they had done here. According to the presenter, the “thing” on the left is named “Vic” and the other is called “Ddory” (or “Tory”). You get the idea, right? Furthermore, with the increase of female fans in Korean professional baseball, their intent was to make the fans want to touch the mascots. Korean women must be into hairy beasts.
Well, to me, it looks more like these creatures below dyed in black and grey with leftover Halloween costumes on them:
The kt wiz will play in the Futures League (Korea’s level 2 baseball league) next season, and will enter the Korea Baseball Championship competition in 2015.
