Ryudiculous – May 11, 2010

On this day…

in 2010, Ryu Hyun-jin (류현진) with the Hanwha Eagles back then struck out a record 17 batters against the LG Twins.  Ryu went the distance giving up just one run on five hits and a walk.  124 pitches were thrown by Ryu.  This record stands as the most strikeouts by a pitcher in a 9 inning game in the Korea Baseball Championship.

The previous record was set just in the league’s second year after its inauguration.  Busan Lotte Giants legend, the late Choi Dong-won (최동원), who passed away in 2011, struck out 16 against the Samsung Lions on June 7, 1983.  After a decade, Haitai Tigers right-hander, Sun Dong-yeol (선동열), who was known and Choi’s rival and who now manages the KIA Tigers, tied it with a 16-strikeout performance in 1992 against the OB Bears.  Another Tigers pitcher by the name of Lee Dae-jin (이대진) equalled the two legends with a 16 strikeout game of his own in 1998 against the Hyundai Unicorns.

The record for the most strikeouts by a pitcher in a game is 18.  This was done in 1991 by the aforementioned Sun Dong-yeol.  However, this was achieved in a 13-inning frame.

Among the pitchers mentioned in this post, Ryu is the only lefty.  Ryu finished the 2010 season with a 16-4 record, 1.82 ERA, and 187 strikeouts (most in the league).
