Ambulance Service for Women’s Baseball Tournament Fined

A private ambulance service based out of Seoul has been fined two million KRW (1,650 USD) for operating beyond its boundaries.  The company has been accused of sending two of its ambulances for the LG International Women’s Baseball Tournament back in August 2014 to Icheon, a city located about 60 km (37 mi.) southeast of Seoul.


Masan Baseball Stadium and Its Parking Problems

Park Jong-wan, sports writer for idomin.com, raised concerns on the Masan Baseball Stadium’s parking issue.  He pointed out nearly 600 of the 1,000 parking spaces have been sold for monthly parking, and it takes about an hour for fans from the Changwon districts to reach the ballpark.  With the sports complex neighboring two major retailers now, access to the ballpark may become even worse.


Park Chan-ho Denies Career in Politics

With political parties eyeing former sports stars to add to their roster, former Major Leaguer and Hanwha Eagles pitcher Park Chan-ho (박찬호) has been on the rumor mill, which has him running for office in April’s legislative election.  However, an acquaintance of his has denied those rumors and said Park declined offers to run for office.  So far, Park has never mentioned publicly of pursuing a career in politics.

Future of Samsung Lions Under Question

With rumors of Samsung Group placing Cheil Worldwide Inc. on the block, the future of the Samsung Lions has also been under considerable amount of question.  At the end of last year, the group had Cheil Worldwide acquire its entire sports programs in search of what they claim, “A profit model through sports”.  Currently, Cheil Worldwide has denied such rumors despite Korea Exchange’s inquiry notice request.


Changwon Confirms Plans of New Stadium

The city of Changwon settled on the basic multi-use development plan for the NC Dinos’ new baseball stadium, which would provide leisure and tourism as well as development to the local community.  Demolition of the main stadium will begin in June with constructions of the new ballpark scheduled for this September.


Government Announces Plans to Develop Sports Industry

The South Korean government announced its plans to encourage investments which hopes to develop the sports industry into a 50 trillion-KRW market.  Plans related to baseball include i) encouraging athletic representation in professional sports, ii) combining the management of professional and amateur baseball into a single organization, and iii) building international competitions among professional sports leagues in East Asia.


Park Zi-a to Start Opening Exhibition Game of New Ballpark

Actress Park Zi-a (박지아) has been announced as the starter for the inaugural exhibition game at Daegu Samsung Lions Park.  Former Samsung Lion greats will face a celebrity all-star team on March 19 after the opening ceremony of the Lions’ new ballpark.  Park is serving as the goodwill ambassador for this year’s Women’s Baseball World Cup in Busan, and is working hard to make the national team as well.
