What is VMI?
VMI stands for the Virginia Military Institute, which is a public military college located in Lexington, Virginia. Founded in 1839, VMI is one of the six Senior Military Colleges in the United States and the first public Senior Military College in the nation. VMI is highly regarded for its traditions and rigorous academic standards, and is well known for its Corps of Cadets who are required to abide by the school’s strict code of conduct.
Does VMI Have a Baseball Team?
The answer is yes, VMI does have a baseball team. The VMI Keydets baseball team is a member of the Southern Conference and competes in NCAA Division I college baseball. The team is coached by Jonathan Hadra, who is in his fifth season as head coach. The Keydets play their home games at Gray–Minor Stadium on the VMI campus.
VMI Baseball History
The VMI Keydets baseball team first began playing in 1891, and they have been competing in the Southern Conference since 1981. The Keydets have had great success in the conference, winning four regular season championships and one tournament championship. They have also made numerous NCAA Tournament appearances, including a runner-up finish in the College World Series in 1976.
VMI Baseball Roster
The VMI baseball team is comprised of 27 players from all over the country, including six from Virginia. The roster includes five seniors, seven juniors, 10 sophomores, and five freshmen. The roster also includes two catchers, five infielders, five outfielders, and 17 pitchers.
VMI Baseball Recruiting
VMI has a very rigorous recruiting process and only accepts the best players into their program. The Keydets look for players with a strong work ethic, a commitment to academics, and the potential to be great team leaders. The coaching staff also looks for players with good character and a passion for the game.
VMI Baseball Schedule
The VMI baseball team plays a 40-game schedule each season, with 20 home games and 20 away games. The Keydets typically play teams from the Southern Conference and other Division I schools. VMI usually plays two non-conference series each year, with one series taking place in the spring and one in the fall.
VMI Baseball Facilities
The VMI baseball team plays their home games at Gray–Minor Stadium, which is located on the VMI campus. The stadium was built in 1985 and has a capacity of 2,500 fans. The stadium features natural grass and features a press box, concession stands, and a full-service clubhouse.
VMI Baseball Coaching Staff
The VMI baseball team is led by head coach Jonathan Hadra, who is in his fifth season as head coach. He is assisted by assistant coach Michael Stahl, who is in his fourth season, and volunteer assistant coach Evan Ogburn, who is in his second season. All three coaches bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the program.
VMI Baseball Accolades
The VMI baseball team has earned numerous accolades in recent years. The team won the Southern Conference regular season championship in 2015, 2016, and 2017, and also won the SoCon tournament championship in 2015. The Keydets have also had several players earn All-America, All-Region, and All-Conference honors.
